Petrey Family Shares a Gift That Endures
Clay Petrey was scrolling through photos of his precious grandchildren on his phone while sharing stories of recent family adventures. He described when and why he made recent estate planning decisions. In the last year, he reached a milestone in his life—retirement. This new phase afforded Clay the time to ponder his legacy and what’s most important to him.
“Our children, Beth ’02 and Cal ’00, had such an amazing experience at USN, starting back in the late ‘80s. They kept lifelong friends, as did my wife, Suzanne, and I. And now we have grandchildren who are a treasure. We’ve been very lucky; I’ve been very lucky. As I considered people and institutions that really mattered to our family, University School was high on the list. I hope I can help others who may benefit from my good fortune.
“My goal is to help USN maintain the culture we all know and love: excellent academics, diversity in its many forms, successful arts and athletics, a community of learners, and the best teachers in the country.
“My bequest is designated to the general endowment. Even a building won’t endure all time, but an endowment outlives me; it lives in perpetuity and gives the trustees the flexibility to decide what to do with the earnings. It is a privilege to make this commitment.”
